Australia - Brisbane, Queensland - 13.7.1961

Dear Pen,

We have about 5 hours here, tried to get in touch with Tony (my uncle) but couldn't.  How did the Spook raising* go?

     Love Nan

* I was 16 years old now and getting into Seance's, I loved them as did my friends.  There are two I remember best, one was in 1961 when one of my friends asked who would win the Melbourne Cup.  I wasn't into Horse racing then or now really but I do remember Lord Fury was spelled out... how could we forget that Seance! Lord Fury did win but none of us were old enough or trusting enough to put money on him.
The second was a couple of years later and I asked who I would marry, I was going out with a David Furley at the time... David was spelled out, then the glass went to the F but then went to the G, then the F and then the G and it seemed to be angry so I don't know if I was pushing it towards the F or not!

I hadn't met David Griffiths then...  Spooky eh!   I haven't done a Seance since......  I wonder why  LOL

Dear Tim,

Hope you know a guinea pig when you see one.    Had a good trip up.   Brisbane is Cold!!

     Love Nan

Dear Pen,

Dear Timmy,

We landed at Coolangatta, but came straight here so haven't yet had a chance to see the Aquarium.  Poor Susie hasn't been swimming yet the pool is being painted but should be ready soon I hope.

     Lots of love, Nan

24.10.1960

Dear Mer,

Don't think we will see any platypus here, but thought you'd like the picture anyway.   Lots of sparrows come on to our balcony for toast and bread we save for them.  One has extremely greedy children so we save lots of crumbs for her.

New Zealand Kiwi.    The wingless Kiwi is unique to New Zealand and lives in the farthest depths of the forest, where it is rarely seen by man.  The Kiwi lays a very large egg in proportion to it's own size.  Kiwis may be seen in the Auckland and Wellington Zoos and in Napier.

Fiji - 6.11.1959

Fijian Policeman.  The handsome appearance and fine physique of the Fijian Policeman on traffic duty never fails to attract visitors.

Fiji.  6.11.1969

Dear Tim,

Fiji is very like New Caledonia.  We were thrilled to see a policeman like this in Suva this morning.

Lots of love, Nan and Sue

U.S.A. - San Francisco, California - 23.10.1959

A paradise for tourists, California contains a land area of 156,803 sq miles, with every contrasting extreme of topography and climate to be found in U.S. with highest (Mt Whitney) and lowest (Death Valley) points in U.S.
Capital, Sacramento, population, nearly 11,000,000.  Leads world in production of motion pictures.  Rich in production of petroleum, mineral products and cotton, furnishes bulk of nations' supply of farm produce.  Second largest state in Union.

San Francisco, California - 23.10.1959

Dear Pen,

We went along the line marked with X'.     Saw masses and masses of cotton and grapes growing, also Mt Shasta.  We've had a good trip on the ship so far we have a big cabin with proper beds, not bunks.  Lots of fog all the way from Vancouver, fog horn makes a horrible noise.  Nice and sunny here though.
     Lots of love, N & S

San Francisco - 23.10.1959

Dear Merry,

I am writing this in bed in my cabin.  Sue and I saw Fisherman's Wharf this morning and we went for a bus trip this afternoon into a forest of simply huge redwood trees.  We leave here tomorrow I think your next card will be from Honolulu.

     Lots of love, N & S

Canada - Banff, Alberta - 17.10.1959

Bull Moose (Alces americana) - Weighing from 800 to 1400 pounds and with shovel-like antlers sometimes reaching a width of six feet, this unusually ugly animal is lord of the coniferous forests of Canada and parts of the United States.  He is often seen in lonely lakes, where he feeds on the plants above or below the surface.  A bull can submerge his head for more than 4 minutes.  Normally gentle, this animal becomes bold and aggressive during the mating season.  Despite his apparent bulk and awkwardness, he can move fast, and his font hooves can be as deadly as his mighty antlers.

Banff. 17.10.1959

Dear Pen,

We have just got here, there are snow covered mountains all around us.
We saw a timber wolf this morning from the train also otter and a deer, but no moose like this one.  I've got you some Kookie Byrnes records.

     Love from us both, N & S
18th. We saw two moose today, very odd looking.

Black Bear and Cubs ( Ursus americanus) - Cubs are born during January while the mother is sleeping in her den.  Only nine inches long at birth they snuggle into her fur for warmth, and to nurse.  When spring arrives they waddle from their den on the first trip for food.  If danger threatens, her warning grunt will send the agile cubs climbing the nearest tree.  Often she still protects her young in their second and even third year.

Banff. 17.10.1959

Dear Mer,

The bears like these roam about in the forests here.  I gather they don't hurt you if you don't tease them, but I don't know as I'd like to come face to face with one.

     Love from us both, N & S

U.S.A. - Gila Bend, Arizona - 21.9.1959

Arizona is the land of perfect year round climate.  Northern Arizona's cool summers attract visitors from all over the world to visit the Grand Canyon and other scenic wonders.  Southern Arizona's warm winters make Phoenix and Tucson favourite vacation spots when most of the nation is freezing.

To Pennie,

Bus just ready to go, writing this on post as big as 3 ?

World Champion Palomino.  Clyde Carter and his famous horse Northern Chief.

To Tim,

We see many of these horses, specially in Colorado.

Love N & S.

Desert Giants.  The world's largest and most photographed cacti are the Giant Saguaro of Arizona.  Living on the slopes of the almost waterless desert, these giants grow to heights of 20 to 40 feet tall, and weigh as much as ten tons.

To Meredith,

We went for miles today through this sort of country.

Dear Merry,

Hope you like this picture of the Highland Cattle.  We have seen a lot of them on our trip.  We were very amused to hear that they shear off their coats, just like sheep.

Lots of love, Nan and Sue.

(I had to see where the hotel and town of Strathpeffer was on Google, see photo of hotel below taken from their website... Wow!)
