Tons of love to all.  Tons and tons of love XXXXXXXX  Susie-Anna.

Switzerland - Berne - 17.8.1957

Hotel Bristol, Berne. Switzerland - 17.8.1957

Dear Pennie,

Hope you like this beautiful cow.  We always wonder how they manage to carry such huge bells.  I think this particular sort is their Sunday best, they have smaller ones for everyday use.

      Lots of love, Nan

Dear Merry,

These are the baby bears who were too young for us to see when we were here last time.  We are paying them a visit tomorrow, I hope.  Wouldn't they make darling pets?  I hope Minder Bear* likes them.

     Love Nan
* 'Minder Bear' was Meredith's teddy bear who looked after when she was in Hospital at 3 years of age.

 Dear Bud, (our Mum)

Doesn't this installment of 'The Adventures of the Hat' just say you!  You can't say I don't try hard to keep you amused.  Can't help wondering if anything is wrong, you've spoilt me with being such a regular correspondent.  We have just been back in London two ( ???? )
Had a wonderful few weeks.  I might state that the dirty looking stuff we are sitting on is all part of the Glacier, but constant walking upon has made it that colour.  Our foot stools are chunks of ice.  It's so slippery that the gent who isn't a bear has to help his clients up .  Susy got a good report from school.  ( ???? )

    Love, Nan

France - Paris - 28.5.1957

Hotel Splendid, Paris, France - 28.5.1957

Dear Bud,

Another installment of 'Operation Chapeau!'  If you look carefully behind the woman who is next to me, you will see a small portion of Mill's hat and shoulder.  Surely you must be nearly home by now.  Hope I find a letter from you in London.  Have missed them a lot.  Do hope the holiday was grand fun.  Dying to hear about it.  This is the last leg of our trip, London 5pm tomorrow.  Will send my London address next day, so wait till you get it before writing.  Tell you all the news then.

Love Nan

Italy - Venice - 8.5.1957

Photo Postcard of Nancy Watson and Miss Millicent Armstrong on a Gondola.

Hotel Gabrielli, Venice. Italy - 8.5.1957

Dear Arbud,*

Don't say I don't think up the loveliest treats for you! I just knew you'd like to see the HAT on yet another adventure.  I feel I have now seen everything, a street photographer in Venice!  There we were, thinking no evil to nobody, when from a gondola parked on the other side of the canal comes a flash, followed by the throwing of the ticket into our gondola!  We went for a long trip by gondola ( I can't seem able to help repeating the word 'gondola') this afternoon, and we were snapped by no less than 4 of the pests.  Sometimes they or a small boy waiting on the next bridge who throws the ticket down. You've no idea of what one can see in a canal if one is silly enough to look!  They smell, rather, but I still love Venice dearly.  Leave in the a.m. for Bolzano in the Alps, probably be snowed in, judging by the cold here.  Haven't had any letters from you and the kids for a while, so guess you must be travelling.  No word yet from Sue, but as she has only been at school for 11 days and her letters go to London first, I suppose it's not to be wondered at.  Nan

*My mothers nickname, when she was a little girl she would go up to some flowers and pick the buds off saying as she did it,  Ahhh bud, aaahhhh bud and so on.  So to those who knew her as a child still call her Bud or Arbud.

Rome - 23.3.1957

Pensione, Roma
23.3.1957

Dear Bud*

Thought you'd like a picture of my beret, in case I loose it on my travels.  We've spent four hours driving around Rome in this vehicle.  It was glorious.  The horse eats chocolate.  The cabby was a pet.  Magnificent time is being had by all.  When we woke up on the plane yesterday morning we were greeted by the sight of the most magnificent snow covered mountains, hundreds of miles of them, we were in Turkey and could see similar mountains over the border in Bulgaria and Yugoslavia and Albania.  Unbelievably beautiful.

Will write a proper letter later.  Be sure and write to us,  Nan.

* Bud was a nickname for my mother Rosie.
